I've lived in both. I host events in both. And I have a strong opinion on which one is right for which type of founder.

Canggu and Uluwatu are two completely different worlds, different energy, different community, different lifestyle. Here's how to choose based on where you are in your journey.
I have lived in both. I host events in both. I have watched hundreds of founders choose between them, and I have a strong opinion on who thrives where.
The energy of each area
Canggu moves fast. It is dense, social, noisy in the right ways, coffee shop conversations that turn into collaborations, spontaneous dinners that become partnerships. If you thrive on proximity to people and want high-frequency connection, Canggu delivers that without effort.
Uluwatu is slower, quieter, and more spacious, literally and psychologically. The cliffs and ocean views create a different relationship with time. Work happens differently here. Conversations go deeper faster because there are fewer distractions.
Who thrives in Canggu
- ✦Founders early in their Bali journey who want to build a network quickly
- ✦People who work best with external energy and stimulation around them
- ✦Short-stay visitors (under 3 months) who want maximum connection in limited time
- ✦Digital nomads who want community without committing to one spot
Who thrives in Uluwatu
- ✦Established founders who know what they are building and want space to build it
- ✦Coaches, creatives, and writers who need quiet and natural beauty to do their best work
- ✦Those with families or who want a more grounded, residential quality of life
- ✦Investors looking at property, Uluwatu has better value per dollar and stronger appreciation trajectory
Practical differences
| Factor | Canggu | Uluwatu |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation cost | Higher, 20–40% premium for equivalent property | Better value, especially ocean-view villas |
| Community density | Very high, highest concentration of founders in Bali | Lower but growing fast, more curated |
| Coworking | Abundant options | Limited but improving |
| Infrastructure | Strong, everything nearby | Requires scooter or car for most things |
| Beach / nature | Beach nearby but crowded | Dramatic clifftop, surf beaches, spectacular views |
Where the high-trust community actually is
The highest-trust, most established founders in Bali are increasingly in Uluwatu. Canggu has more people, but more transience. Uluwatu has fewer people, but more depth of commitment, people who have decided to stay, who are building for the long term, who have moved past the novelty phase.
Marina's recommendation
First time in Bali, staying 1–3 months: start in Canggu. Planning to stay 6+ months or make Bali your base: seriously consider Uluwatu. Buying property: Uluwatu, full stop.
If you are not sure: come and spend a week in each. The answer will be obvious once you have felt both.
